Photovoltaic multi-span greenhouse (PV)

ININSA’s photovoltaic multi-span greenhouse (PV) is a structure designed specifically to integrate photovoltaic modules into the roof, enabling simultaneous crop production and electricity generation.

The model uses a mixed roof layout, where PV modules are installed on the straight roof section, and can be combined with flexible coverings (plastic film, screens) or rigid cladding (PVC, polycarbonate, metal sheet, sandwich panels) in areas not occupied by modules. The design considers the agronomic operation of the greenhouse, allowing the installation of ventilation and auxiliary equipment required for crop development.

This greenhouse was designed and developed by ININSA in collaboration with the Department of Engineering at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, incorporating advanced calculation criteria including seismic resistance and more demanding structural parameters than those typically used in conventional greenhouses.

A key aspect of the design is structural deflection control, essential to avoid stresses on PV modules that could compromise integrity and performance. The structure is engineered to minimise deflection, ensuring the durability of both the greenhouse and the PV installation.

The energy generated can be used to power greenhouse systems (automation, climate control, irrigation) and, depending on the project, exported to the grid, increasing overall profitability.

The main structure is fully hot-dip galvanised and assembled without welding using bolted connections, facilitating future lateral and front expansions without dismantling existing structures. The greenhouse can be equipped with the dedicated “Supercenit Plus PV” ridge ventilation, perimeter ventilation and the same equipment options as the curved-roof multi-span models.

ININSA provides each PV project with a fully customised approach, adapting the structure to module dimensions, required power density (MW/m² ratio), crop type and the climatic and regulatory conditions of the site. The company has extensive international experience, with installations carried out especially in Italy and France, where large-scale agrivoltaic projects have been delivered.
